Radiation Protection Services (RRPPS)
RRPPS is the Radiation Physics and Protection Service based within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Our aim is to ensure that we provide our services as efficiently, effectively and consistently as possible to achieve customer satisfaction, to go beyond standard expectations, while meeting statutory and good practice requirements.

RRPPS is the largest and most experienced organisation in the Midlands providing a comprehensive radiation physics and protection service and employs over thirty staff, working from purpose built laboratories, comprising clerical officers, clinical technologists and clinical scientists, to cover protection of ionising and non-ionising radiation, providing guidance, interpretation and training for implementation of regulations and national and international guidance.
Staff are accredited as radiation protection advisers, radioactive waste advisers, laser protection advisers and radiation instrument specialists. RRPPS’ staff also includes magnetic resonance (MR) safety advisors and medical physics experts.
We provide employers and their managers with the advice and support to help them comply with legislation and good practice obligations.
Services provided to hospitals, dental and veterinary clinics, universities, schools and industry include:
- HSE approved personal radiation monitoring
- Radiation & photometer instrument calibration
- Protection advice for ionising and non-ionising radiation
- Quality assurance of diagnostic X-ray equipment and ultrasound equipment
- Scientific support to nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging departments
- Nationally advertised training courses
If you are considering purchasing ultrasound machines, lasers, magnestic resonance or X-ray machines, or you will be using radioactive materials, we can offer the following services:
- Helping to ensure compliance with the appropriate legislation and good practice guidance
- Provide independent advice covering:
- the design and purchase of new facilities
- critical examination of new equipment and premises
- routine surveys
- occupational and patient doses
RRPPS has been recognised as an approved dosimetry service by the Health and Safety Executive ever since the introduction of the Ionising Radiations Regulations in 1985. Our experience in personal monitoring dates back to 1949 and we are the largest approved dosimetry service in the NHS.
RRPPS provides an independent, high quality calibration service for a wide range of diagnostic X-ray and radiation protection instrumentation to both NHS and industry sector customers.
