Research from the Patient Experience team has identified that some patients struggle to cope due to feelings of isolation and loneliness. To support you, the Patient Experience team have compiled a list of organisations that can help.
Marmalade Trust
Marmalade is a charity dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness and helping people make new friendships. Marmalade wants people to see loneliness as an experience, not a condition. We want people to talk about loneliness, not admit to it.
By building a greater awareness and acceptance of loneliness, we can help ourselves and others to manage the feeling.
Campaign to End Loneliness
The Campaign to End Loneliness believes that people of all ages need connections that matter. Having the friendship and support we need is a fundamental part of our wellbeing and when loneliness becomes entrenched in later life it can be hardest to overcome.
They do that by evidence-based campaigning, facilitating learning on the front line and connecting different parts of the loneliness community such as academics, front-line practitioners, decision-makers and businesses.
Independent Age
They are here to challenge ageism and discrimination and tackle the inequalities that exist in older age. They will focus their resources on the critical areas of health and care, loneliness and poverty and concentrate our efforts where they will have the greatest impact and reach.
Red Cross
The British Red Cross works with the government, other organisations and the public to help tackle loneliness. We are committed to helping people affected by loneliness through our services, our advice on loneliness, and our policy and advocacy work. During the Covid-19 outbreak, our coronavirus support line offers help to people feeling lonely because of social isolation. Our online resources for adults and young people will help you gain practical skills to cope with loneliness.
We also offer ideas on what people can do about loneliness and tips if you are feeling lonely during the pandemic.
Action for Children
We protect and support children and young people, providing practical and emotional care and support. We ensure their voices are heard, and campaign to bring lasting improvements to their lives.
Age UK
Testing Promising Approaches to Reducing Loneliness is a programme run by local Age UKs to test and improve loneliness service provisions.
Understand: to better understand an individual's loneliness through conversation and respond to the individual's needs.
Reach: to identify and contact hard-to-reach older people who are lonely; by empowering local health and community services to be aware of loneliness and its indicators and to be equipped with information about local loneliness services. Partners made good use of the Loneliness Heat Map to aid targeting and identification.
Support: to provide wrap-around, tailored support to older people who are lonely by offering practical and emotional solutions that builds confidence and resilience.
Carers UK
When you’re caring, it’s easy to feel cut off. Our carer volunteers and support groups are here to put you in touch with people who understand what you’re going through. We’re here to make sure no-one has to care alone. As well as providing support and expert help and advice, we make life better by connecting carers with each other.
To connect carers in their local communities, we’ve recruited a team of more than 250 volunteers. Our Local Ambassadors are reaching carers and putting them in touch with help from Carers UK as well as local support. Our Awareness Volunteers distribute publicity in their local community to help reach carers.
Refugee Action
We know how confusing and difficult it can be for refugees and asylum seekers to try and rebuild their lives in a new country, especially when struggling to access the help and advice they need. We’re here to help. Our services can provide information and advice on a range of issues including:
- the asylum process
- claiming asylum
- getting the support you’re entitled to while you claim asylum
- homelessness support
Royal Voluntary Service
Our services are delivered one-to-one, in groups and online, and are designed for anyone living with, affected by or at risk of multiple health issues, loneliness and isolation, bereavement and other setbacks or obstacles.
Alzheimers Society
There are things that people with dementia can do to help manage loneliness and depression when living alone. Provides tips on dealing with loneliness and depression if you live alone
Sense
Sense continues to engage with the Tackling Loneliness Team in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. We highlight loneliness in all of our policy areas and it’s a key part of our organisational strategy.
The Silver Line
The Silver Line operates the only confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK that’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.
We also offer telephone friendship where we match volunteers with older people based on their interests, facilitated group calls, and help to connect people with local services in their area.
