University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust( UHB) is a specialist referral centre for hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) cancers. the service focuses on diagnosing and treating patients with cancer of the liver, pancreas, gall bladder and bile duct. The Liver service unit is one of the largest in the country.
All patients with a new cancer diagnosis are reviewed by the specialist cancer team, in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, to agree and recommend a treatment plan.
The Team will provide detailed information about the illness, including investigations, procedures, and treatment options to both patients and families. If surgery is required, explanations will be provided about what to expect before, during, and after the operation to help patients feel prepared.
The HPB clinical nurse specialist (CNS) are experienced nurses who will provide you with information and support around your diagnosis and treatment. CNSs work closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals, and are the main point of contact for patients and their families. CNSs can help with a range of needs.
- Giving information about diagnosis and treatment
- Offering advice and support to help patients live with and beyond cancer
- Directing patients to other places for support / signposting
- CNSs are a key part of a patient's care and are often involved in outpatient clinics
