Signs and symptoms of lung cancer
Early detection saves lives. Be aware of the following common symptoms:
- a persistent cough or coughing up blood
- breathlessness or wheezing
- chest pain or discomfort
- unexplained weight loss or fatigue
If you notice any changes in your health, contact your GP as soon as possible.
Targeted lung health checks
If you are aged 55 to 74 and have ever smoked, you may be eligible for a free Targeted Lung Health Check.
This check can find lung cancer early, often before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective.
People living in areas that offer this programme will be contacted directly. If you think you might be eligible, speak to your GP for more information.
Patient pathway
Initial consultation
At your first appointment, your consultant will talk to you about your symptoms, review your referral, and arrange any tests you may need. These may include CT scans or biopsies.
MDT meeting
Your case will be discussed at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting. The MDT includes respiratory consultants, oncologists, radiologists and clinical nurse specialists.
The team will agree a personalised treatment plan. This may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy. Your consultant or clinical nurse specialist (CNS) will explain the plan and answer any questions.
