Our regional skin oncology service is an experienced team that sees and treats patients with all types of skin cancer. This includes low grade basal cell carcinomas to melanomas and all types of rare skin cancers.
We provide the largest catchment area in the UK from Derby to Mid Wales and down to Hereford. We support all patients through diagnosis, surgical and medical oncology treatment and surveillance follow-up. Together they play their own special role in the cancer treatment pathway to ensure the journey is as smooth and supported as it can be.
We understand that this is a difficult time for all the patients we see, and we aim to provide as much information and support as we can.
Our team offers a range of specialist services which include:
- joint surgical dermatology and plastics clinic
- rare skin cancer clinic
- wide Local Excision (WLE) and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) clinic
- MOHS Clinic
- dermatology nurse-led clinic
- medical oncology clinics
- medical surveillance clinics
- acute oncology clinics
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team is split into two teams. One team focuses on caring for patients having surgery and the other team support patients having medical oncology treatment.
Our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is made up of:
- specialist nurses
- dermatologists
- plastic surgeons
- medical oncologists
- histopathologists
- radiology consultants
Why I am being referred?
Our service offers some investigations and treatments that other local hospitals cannot provide. For example, a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) is a surgical diagnostic test to show whether cancer cells have spread on a microscopic level. This helps us to determine any further treatments required.
We also provide a rare skin cancer clinic specialising in types of cancers that require more experienced surveillance.
Can I receive treatment locally?
In some cases, you may be able to have your treatment at your local hospital. If this is not possible, we would carry out any investigations or treatment at UHB. We would then refer you back to your local hospital for follow-up.
Please ask your doctor or CNS if you have any further questions about this.
