Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Brimingham consists of:

  • 12 dedicated consultants
  • 5 registrar trainees
  • 4 endoscopy fellows
  • 7 junior medical trainees
  • 4 specialist nurses in inflammatory bowel disease
  • 3 endoscopy nurse practitioners
  • 2 gastroenterology pharmacists
  • Team of nutrition nurses and dietitians

Inpatient and emergency care is provided 24 hours a day.

The outpatient service cares for patients with various GI diseases. There are multiple disciplinary teams including, radiology, histopathology, oncology, upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeons to plan the management of cancer and inflammatory bowel disease patients. 

The Gastroenterology Unit houses a level three intestinal failure service that offers home parenteral nutrition. The unit, based at QEHB, is also home to cutting edge research programmes that recruit participants into various clinical trials.

The Endoscopy Unit at QEHB is made up of four dedicated outpatient rooms and an inpatient suite. The unit is open every day for outpatient and emergency inpatient procedures. The unit also offers a bowel cancer screening service. The unit performs an array of complex and specialist procedures including:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Enteroscopy
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Advanced therapeutic endoscopy
    • Barrett’s therapies
    • Polypectomy
    • Upper and lower endoscopic mucosal resection
    • Endoscopic stenting
    • Luminal dilatation
