Self-referring your pregnancy

Once you find out that you are pregnant, you can self-refer your pregnancy to our maternity services via BadgerNotes. This is a safe and secure website. Your referral will be sent straight to the booking office of your chosen hospital. Your community midwife will then contact you with a booking appointment. You do not need to see your GP first.

Please note, if the hospital you are looking to self-refer to does not appear as an option via the link, please speak to your GP.

We encourage you to self-refer your pregnancy as soon as possible after finding out that you are pregnant. This is to make sure that your screening tests and scans are arranged in a timely way.

If you need support filling in the online form, you can ask someone else to do the form for you, for example a relative. If you are experiencing any issues with filling in or understanding the form, please ring our community midwifery office.

Booking your first appointment

After your referral, one of our community midwives will contact you to arrange your first appointment. This appointment should ideally take place before 10 weeks. This is known as the ‘booking appointment’.

The booking appointment will take about one to two hours, and you are welcome to bring someone with you.

During this appointment, the midwife will take a detailed family and medical history and ask screening questions. This may be of a sensitive nature. This is to make sure that you are registered for our maternity services and cared for by the right services.

Within this information, we may use the terms "woman" and "women". However, we recognise that not only people who identify as women may want to access this content. Your care should be personalised, inclusive and sensitive to your needs, whatever your gender identity.
