The dietetic service for Diabetes at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is delivered by an experienced team of specialist dietitians dedicated to supporting people living with diabetes to effectively manage their condition through tailored nutritional care and education.

Conditions we manage

our service provides specialist dietetic support for all types of diabetes across a wide range of therapies and clinical needs.

  • All types of diabetes managed across all available therapies
  • First-line nutritional advice provided
  • Support for oral therapies and non-insulin injectable therapies
  • Insulin therapy management, including multiple daily injections (MDI) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII/pump) with or without hybrid-closed loops (HCL)
  • Tailored support available for all types of diabetes requiring more specialised input
  • Support for preconception and pregnancy planning
  • Management for individuals with additional medical conditions such as cancer, liver disease, or renal disease
  • Guidance for sport and exercise management

What to expect 

The team provides a patient-centred approach to diabetes management through both one-to-one and group sessions, supporting healthy eating and weight management, carbohydrate counting and insulin dose adjustment, and specialist therapeutic diets.

Who we work with

A collaborative approach to diabetes management is taken and frequent joint consultations with other members of multi-disciplinary team are common place. 

The staff worked with includes: 

  • eight consultant diabetologists and physicians 
  • 16 specialist nurses 
  • four support staff  

How to be referred

The service is delivered on an outpatient basis at the Diabetes Centre in Nuffield House, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), with referrals accepted from the QEHB Diabetes or dietetic teams. Patients must have a diagnosis of diabetes and receive their usual diabetes care from a QEHB diabetes consultant.
