General Medicine, Stroke, Healthcare of Older People

The team is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), working mostly across wards on the fifth floor and at the Heritage Building, playing an important part throughout the patients journey. From arriving in the Acute Medical Unit through to General Medicine, Respiratory, Stroke and Healthcare of Older People wards.  

The team also provide a general medicine outpatient clinic to people who have ongoing care from specialist consultants at QEHB. 

Conditions we manage

Nutritional care is provided for people with a wide range of medical and mental health conditions, including those who have experienced a stroke or are living with conditions common in older adults, such as dementia or swallowing difficulties. Support is also available for individuals with respiratory conditions, including those requiring oxygen to assist with their breathing.

  • Nutritional assessment
  • Anthropometric measurement
  • Education and behaviour change strategies
  • Nutrition support through food, supplement drinks and enteral tube feeding
  • Therapeutic diets
  • Close working with the multidisciplinary team
  • Linking with community dietitians as required

Who we work with

We work closely with patients and the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including consultant physicians, nursing staff, allied health professionals (especially speech and language therapists and physiotherapists). Our MDTs often extend to healthcare teams in the community or in rehab settings.  

How to be referred

Inpatients can be referred to dietetics by hospital staff. Outpatient referrals are accepted for patients who are under the care of a QEHB consultant.
