As a Major Trauma Centre and Regional Centre for Neurosciences, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) plays a pivotal role in ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care. 

Recognising the critical role nutrition plays in recovery, rehabilitation, and overall wellbeing, with a focus on delivering tailored nutritional interventions to support optimal healing and health outcomes. 

Conditions we manage

The team provides specialized nutritional care for patients with the following conditions: 

  • major trauma:
    • multiple fractures
    • amputations
    • soft tissue injuries
  • head and spinal injuries. 
  • neurological conditions: 
    • motor Neurone Disease
    • multiple sclerosis
    • Parkinson’s disease
    • epilepsy
    • encephalitis
    • nutritional deficiencies

  • Comprehensive Nutritional Assessment, tailored to individual needs

  • Nutrition support

    • diet plans

    • supplements

    • enteral tube feeding. 

  • Ongoing Guidance and Support, to ensure sustained nutritional management throughout recovery

  • Collaboration with community dietitians (When necessary, we coordinate with community-based professionals for continued care)

Who we work with

The team work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, and therapists, to ensure integrated care, effective communication, and optimal patient outcomes.

How to be referred

Inpatient referrals: patients may be referred via the ward staff on PICS system. 

Outpatient referrals: accepted for patients under the care of a QEHB neurologist.
