Neuromuscular

The Neuromuscular Service supports children and young people who experience weakness due to conditions affecting the muscles or nerves. Children may be seen by a specialist physiotherapist, neuromuscular nurse, care advisor, and a doctor during their visit.

The service is a recognised Muscular Dystrophy Centre of Excellence and serves as a regional centre.

At an initial appointment, tests may be carried out to help identify the cause of muscle weakness.

Children with muscle weakness usually attend regular clinic visits once or twice a year, during which their muscle strength is measured and monitored. Many children are also reviewed at the same appointment by respiratory doctors and nurses to assess breathing muscles. Depending on age and condition, spirometry tests may be performed, recorded, and reviewed at each visit. Additional appointments with team members may be arranged outside of regular clinic times if further support is needed.

Some children and young people with muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy or spinal muscular atrophy, may also take part in clinical trials of new treatments.
