Renal Unit

The Department of Renal Medicine provides specialist kidney care for people in Birmingham, the Black Country, and nearby areas. It also offers dialysis and kidney transplant services to a wider region.

The team works across four hospitals: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, and Solihull Hospital. Patients who need to stay in hospital are treated at QEHB or Heartlands.

The department is one of the largest in the UK, with more than 40 consultants and over 750 staff, including specialist nurses and dietitians. It has four kidney wards and Renal Admissions Units (RAU) at QEHB and Heartlands for patients needing urgent care.

Dialysis is available at many locations, including 13 satellite units. Peritoneal dialysis is managed from hubs at QEHB and Heartlands.

The department also runs clinics for a wide range of kidney conditions and works with community services. It has a regional transplant service and is active in research, with several consultants holding senior research positions nationally and internationally.
