Who are we?
At Heartlands Hospital, our Acute Stroke Ward (Ward 32) is a 24-bed unit dedicated to providing high-quality care for patients who have experienced a stroke. Our expert, multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to ensure comprehensive support for every patient, from immediate treatment through to rehabilitation and discharge.
We are a multidisciplinary team consisting of:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Dieticians
- Therapy Support Workers
- Pharmacists
- Orthoptists ( via referral only)
Each team member plays a key role in delivering tailored care to address all aspects of recovery and rehabilitation.
What we do?
We provide specialist care for a wide range of stroke-related symptoms, including physical, cognitive, communication, and visual challenges. Our team offers medical treatment as well as targeted therapies to support each patient's unique needs. By delivering holistic care in the early and acute stages following a stroke, we aim to improve recovery outcomes and help patients manage the often-life-changing impact of a stroke. Every patient receives an individualised care plan to meet their specific needs.
Delivering Your Care
- Patient Pathway: Many of our patients are transferred to Ward 32 from the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), while others come directly to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
- Comprehensive Discharge Planning: Once a patient is medically stable, our team works to ensure they are safely discharged with the right support in place. Our therapy team helps to identify ongoing needs and make appropriate plans for continued care. Therapy can also continue after discharge to support long-term recovery. For residents of Birmingham or Solihull who go home from hospital, ongoing therapy will be provided by the Stroke Early Supported Discharge (ESD) team, or the Solihull Adult Neuro Team (SANT).
- Patients living within Birmingham and Solihull may be referred to Moseley Hall Hospital for consideration of an inpatient stay if further rehabilitation is required. These beds are managed to Birmingham Community Healthcare (BCHC).
At Heartlands Hospital, we are committed to providing the highest level of care for those affected by stroke, helping each patient recover and regain independence at every stage of their journey, in the most appropriate environment.
