Who are we?
Our Comprehensive Stroke Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) provides high quality care for patients who have had a stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA). We provide a 24-hour Mechanical Thrombectomy Service.
There are approximately 1600 admissions per year to University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) stroke service. There are also acute stroke beds at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH). All Acute Stroke admissions are triaged through University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Stroke team before admission to QEHB for their hyper-acute stay (usually the first 48-72 hours). Patients local to our other units will be transferred to BHH and GHH after their hyper-acute episode for ongoing acute stroke unit care.
The Stroke Ward (Ward 514) at QEHB has 36 beds in total of which 12 are Hyper Acute Stroke Unit designated beds.

Rehab and Therapy services
After a stroke, some patients require ongoing inpatient rehabilitation. Patients living within Birmingham and Solihull may be referred to Moseley Hall Hospital for consideration of an inpatient stay. The inpatient rehabilitation beds are managed by Birmingham Community and Health Care NHS Trust (BCHC).
The majority of patients will be able to return to their own home but those with ongoing difficulties related to their stroke will be referred to their local Early Supported Discharge (ESD) Team. The three teams within Birmingham and Solihull are South and Central ESD (South ESD is a BCHC team), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH) ESD and Good Hope Hospital (GHH) ESD.
For those that live within the Solihull area there is the Solihull Adult Neuro Team (SANT). All UHB sites will refer to SANT, BHH ESD and GHH ESD for rehab services.
Our focus is delivering high quality care in the most appropriate place, this will often be outside of the acute hospital setting.
