Preparing your mind

Undergoing major surgery is a significant physical ordeal, but its emotional aftermath can be equally challenging.

While the focus often lies on the physical recovery, the emotional landscape post-surgery is equally critical to address.

Strategies for managing emotional after-effects

  • Acknowledge your emotions
  • Build a strong support system
  • Practice self-care
  • Stay informed
  • Engage in meaningful activities

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a simple tool you can use to help manage any anxiety both before and after surgery.

Simple steps to mindfulness

  1. Set aside some time
  2. Find a comfortable place
  3. Notice your body
    1. Be consciously aware of your senses. What can you feel? What can you smell? What can you hear? Is  there any taste in your mouth?
    2. This can help you feel more connected with your body  and less concerned about thoughts whizzing around your head
  4. Feel your breath
    1. Follow the sensation of your breath in and out
  5. Notice when your mind has wandered
    1. If you notice your mind has wandered, try to shift your focus back to your breath
  6. Be kind to your wandering mind
