Paediatric surgery unit

As part of the Trust's response to COVID-19, there are plans for paediatric elective surgery to be undertaken within the current Day Surgery Unit at Heartlands Hospital.

So that COVID-19 negative paediatric patients can have their surgery at the unit, it is planned to make the changes needed to provide the environment and infrastructure needed for a paediatric theatre suite. These include:

  • Separate entrances and exits for patients and staff
  • Allocated drop off and collection points
  • Allocated space for patient and family on the day screening and health questionnaire completion
  • Space in  bays to facilitate social distancing
  • environmental improvements including theatre lighting and children friendly art work

The Paediatric Surgery Unit is due to open in mid November 2020.

Critical care reservist workforce

Staff have the opportunity to join the critical care reservist workforce and assist in caring for our critically ill patients during crucial times such as COVID-19.

For staff who don't currently work in a critical care role, it's a chance to become part of the Trust response team, learning new skills and working in a different environment.

The critical care reservist workforce will be multi-disciplinary and will include clinical and non-clinical staff.

For staff that would like to consider the role, there will not be an interview or assessment process, but they will be asked to complete a proforma so that the workforce is consisted of staff with a comprehensive spread of skills across the organisation.

More information is available on the intranet.
