Growth and Progression Pathway (GaPP)

The Growth and Progression Pathway (GaPP) supports healthcare support workers during their first year at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The programme offers practical learning, pastoral support and opportunities to develop at work.

Who the programme is for

GaPP is for healthcare support workers. You will be invited to join three months after completing clinical induction.

You can attend day one before completing the Care Certificate. You must complete the Care Certificate before attending day two.

What the programme includes

The programme has five study days. Each day focuses on a different part of your role, wellbeing and development.

Day one: wellbeing

Working in healthcare can be demanding. You may support people who are worried, bereaved or receiving difficult news. Busy workloads can also affect your health and how your team works.

This study day will help you:

  • recognise and manage stress
  • look after your wellbeing so you can care for others
  • understand UHB’s values of kind, connected and bold
  • find wellbeing support available through UHB and the wider NHS

Day two: working together

This interactive day focuses on teamwork, communication and mutual respect. You will work with others on practical tasks and consider the challenges faced by different colleagues.

You will also explore UHB’s behavioural framework and the importance of kindness and consideration at work.

You will be encouraged to complete a quality improvement project for your department, either on your own or as part of a group. You will present your project to your cohort on the final day.

Day three: preventing harm

Patient safety is an important part of healthcare. This day will help you understand common risks and the steps UHB takes to prevent harm.

You will:

  • learn about tissue viability, falls, end of life care, safer swallowing and the patient safety team
  • explore human factors and how they affect patient safety
  • discuss learning from incidents and near misses
  • learn when and how to report and escalate concerns

Guest speakers and group discussions will help you apply this learning to your role.

Day four: Care Certificate assessor

After completing the Care Certificate, you may be ready to support and assess colleagues who are newer to the role.

This interactive day will help you:

  • understand the Care Certificate and the principles of assessment
  • support, teach and assess colleagues effectively
  • give constructive feedback
  • use reflection to support learning
  • practise teaching and feedback skills

Day five: career development, courageous conversations and quality improvement

Healthcare support workers make an important contribution to patient care and often build close relationships with patients.

On the final day, you will:

  • find out about learning and career development opportunities within and outside UHB
  • develop skills for difficult or sensitive conversations
  • reflect on learning from earlier study days
  • share your quality improvement project with your peers

You must attend days one to four before you can attend day five and complete the programme.
