Patient and public involvement forums

What is a patient and public involvement forum?

Hospital patient and public involvement forums (PPIFs) are a platform where patient and public representatives, together with Trust staff, can share a practical interest in how University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) delivers patient care.

UHB’s PPIFs forums will:

  • support each hospital to further understand patient experience and to involve patients, carers and the community in responding to the feedback
  • act as a critical friend to the hospital, by working with staff, patients and third sector organisations, to co-produce improvements in patient experience

There is a patient and public Involvement forum at each of our hospital sites:

  • Good Hope Hospital
  • Heartlands Hospital
  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
  • Solihull Hospital

Heartlands Hospital PPIF also covers Birmingham Chest Clinic and Solihull Hospital PPIF also covers UHB Community Services.

In addition to the four hospital PPIFs, we also have a Youth Voice Council. This is for young people aged 16-24 who are interested in improving the experiences of young patients at UHB.

What can you expect as a member of the PPIF?

  • To attend the PPIF meetings at the hospital once every two months. Members can attend in person or participate online.
  • To have the opportunity to take part in visits to areas of the hospital, speaking with patients about their experience. These visits take place once every two months and are coordinated by the patient experience team.
  • To be asked for your insights on issues impacting on patient experience.
  • To be invited to attend and receive reports following PPIF hospital visits.
  • To receive minutes from the relevant hospital patient experience group to keep you informed about how the hospital is responding to feedback.
  • To receive results of national patient surveys, including action plans.
  • To co-produce, with the Trust, on matters impacting patient experience or projects relating to service improvements/changes.

How do I join a forum or find out more information?

If you have any further questions regarding our hospital patient and public involvement forums, please contact the patient experience team.
