A warm welcome to our international doctors

The Trust has welcomed 44 international doctors who are undertaking UHB's International Training Fellowship Programme.
Having been through a competitive recruitment process, the doctors from Pakistan and India will spend two years at UHB. They will be an integral part of their clinical teams and the Trust will benefit from their skills and expertise.
The doctors undertake an intensive clinical and non-clinical induction programme which includes a period of clinical shadowing as they join their chosen specialties. The fellows will carry out all the duties of their respective grades independently and participate in the on-call rota. The programme provides structured and supervised training in identified clinical specialties with an emphasis on a practical 'hands-on' approach.
The International Training Fellowship Programme began in 2010 and aims to develop strong long-term relationships with overseas organisations. Over the past decade, UHB has hosted visits from a number of high profile individuals from countries such as Oman and Pakistan who wish to collaborate with the Trust on the training and development of their medical workforce.
In February and August each year, UHB accepts an intake of trainees from all over the world, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. No distinction is made between international training fellows and local UK trainees; all trainees participate in the full range of departmental clinical and educational activities.
The programme is open to international postgraduate medical trainees, sponsored either by their government or another recognised sponsoring body. Applicants have a primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC and a postgraduate qualification and/or evidence of completion of a recognised training scheme. They also have between three and five years’ experience in their specialty.
