Two central decontamination units, which high level disinfect over 50,000 hospital flexible devices a year for use across Heartlands and Solihull hospitals, have received national accreditation in recognition of the high-quality services they provide.

Following an inspection from the British Standards Institution, the units received a glowing report resulting in them being accredited to BSEN ISO 13485, which is a quality management standard for reusable medical devices.

The unit at Heartlands Hospital alone incorporates a range of cutting-edge technologies since it moved into the new Heartlands Treatment Centre in 2022, including ultraviolet disinfection machines, and highly sophisticated storage and
tracking systems to ensure the highest standards.

Training and development is a key driver at the units, with its decontamination technicians recognised as healthcare scientists within the decontamination industry.

The accreditation is a result of hard work and excellence in service delivery and high standards in the processing of medical devices across the two units.

Karen Johnson, Director of Corporate Nursing, said: “This accreditation is the national standard for decontamination
services and highlights our ongoing commitment to provide patients with safe, sterile, and fit for purpose medical devices used in theatres and clinics throughout Heartlands and Solihull hospitals.

“I would like to thank all of the staff involved for helping to ensure the decontamination units maintain their consistently high standards.”
