From injury to 'I do': heartfelt thanks to hospital staff

Luke Davies, who is 34 years old and from Birmingham, has expressed his immense gratitude to the staff at Good Hope Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) for their exceptional care, which enabled him to attend his wedding day.
On 27 May 2023, Luke presented to Good Hope A&E with a dislocated and fractured ankle, following an unfortunate accident just 15 days before his much-anticipated wedding to his partner, Connie. After scans showed severe damage to his ankle, Luke was swiftly transferred to QEHB by ambulance in the early hours of 28 May 2023, to undergo crucial surgery.
Following his operation on 1 June 2023, Luke spent two days on the Wellcome Short Stay ward at QEHB, where he was cared for by Trudi Smith, Senior Sister, and her team. Luke's gratitude and admiration for the exceptional care he received were evident as he praised staff for their role in making his wedding day a reality.
Luke said: “Wow! Trudi, can I just say your team on the Wellcome Short Stay ward are absolutely amazing! I came onto this ward with no hope of making my wedding day; I felt so low, but your team pushed me through this. So I would like to thank them all for the amazing job that they do.
“The nurses who looked after me were all incredible; they gave me the best care and attention I could ever ask for. When Karen is on shift she runs the ward very, very well. She is such a lovely person and a fantastic sister. She has very high standards and does not miss a trick. Most importantly, the team around her respect her and deliver for her.
“Fantastic, honestly what a credit these staff are to you. A very special thanks to Mr Fenton and Mr Kalogrianitis, and their teams too, for completing the surgery in good time and giving me my chance of getting married. Words cannot express how thankful we are for this.”
Last week, Luke attended QEHB for a physio appointment, where he took his first steps since the injury back in May 2023. Luke said “It feels really weird to be walking again but it’s a great feeling to know that I am on the road to recovery.”
