Heartlands Hospital neonatal unit receives prestigious award for care of babies and their families

Heartlands Hospital neonatal unit has been awarded silver accreditation by the national baby charity Bliss, recognising the high standard of care and support provided to premature and sick babies and their families.

The Bliss Baby Charter Accreditation Programme assesses neonatal units across the UK against best-practice standards designed to ensure families are at the heart of their baby’s care. The charter provides support and guidance for neonatal teams to help them build strong relationships with parents and deliver a family-centred service.

As part of the accreditation process, the neonatal team worked closely with families to develop a number of initiatives aimed at improving the experience of parents and babies. These include the introduction of ‘sound ears’ in critical care rooms, allowing staff to monitor and reduce noise levels to support babies’ brain development. The team also ensured that every cot space has a comfortable chair, enabling parents to spend meaningful time with their baby. All the initiatives are focused on empowering families and ensuring they are fully involved in decision-making about their baby’s care.

Heartlands neonatal unit was previously awarded bronze accreditation in 2022.

Lead Nurse for Family Integrated Care at University Hospitals Birmingham, Laura Wheeler said: “We are delighted to receive the Bliss Baby Charter silver accreditation. It is a fantastic reflection of the hard work and dedication our team showcase daily. Achieving the silver award was a huge step towards becoming a Bliss Baby Charter accredited unit and enables us to showcase our commitment to improving and providing neonatal care to the highest standard.

“Together we have made positive changes to the ways we work in preparation of this accreditation. It has helped us reflect deeply on our practices and implement positive changes to enhance the family experience.”

Bhavna Gokani, Director of Nursing Gynaecology and Children and Young People said: “This accreditation is a true testament to the passion and dedication of our colleagues across our neonatal services, and a team who consistently strives to go above and beyond for the babies and their families. It’s fantastic to see these changes have made such a difference. Well done to everyone involved.”

The neonatal team is now looking ahead to achieving gold accreditation within the next 12 to 24 months, with a longer-term ambition to reach platinum Bliss Baby Charter accreditation.
