International training fellows bid a fond farewell
Published on 11/02/2022

The Trust’s latest group of international fellows received their certificates and said goodbye to UHB this week. The 28 fellows have completed UHB’s International Training Fellowship Programme, a full-time and comprehensive hands-on experience delivered by senior clinicians. The certificate ceremony celebrated their achievements and was an opportunity for the fellows to see each other before heading to their homes across the globe.
Mr Mike Hallissey, Medical Director for Education, led the ceremony and addressed the fellows:
“It’s been quite a journey over the past two years – it’s not what any of us expected. Firstly, I want to commend you on your bravery, for taking the risk and travelling halfway across the world to undertake this training programme. Secondly, I speak on behalf of the whole executive team, when I say we are so grateful for your efforts caring for patients over this period. We hope it has broadened your experience and helped you work towards becoming the best doctor you can be.”
Established in 2010, the International Training Fellowship Programme has long-term relationships with overseas organisations and is focused on ‘learn and return’. This means that, in addition to providing quality hands-on clinical training across the full range of medical specialties, the programme requires fellows to return to their home countries.
UHB accepts a regular intake of trainees from all over the world, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
Mr Hallissey concluded by thanking the fellows: “Thank you for everything you have done and we wish you the best of luck for the future. Please keep in touch with us here in Birmingham. As a trust, UHB never stands still - we are constantly doing things differently and moving forward so please visit us again in a few years’ time. We would love to see you.”
Fellows are encouraged to join the Trust’s international alumni programme as a means of keeping in touch and facilitating contact between previous and current fellows so they can support and inspire each other.
