The Enhanced Post-Operative Care (EPOC) Team at Queen Elizabeth Birmingham Hospital (QEHB) has cared for its 3,000th patient.

The EPOC service provides an enhanced level of care for patients after their elective and emergency surgery. Launched in 2020, the service enables operations to go ahead that may have had to be cancelled previously if a critical care bed was not available.

Dr Pete Hewins, Medical Director, Joanne Basketfield, Director of Nursing and Sally Austin, Director of Operations, joined the EPOC team on Friday 24 November to celebrate this fantastic achievement.

Sally thanked the team for their kind invitation to celebrate the achievement of caring for 3,000 patients.

She said: “The EPOC team provides excellent clinical care post operatively and the unit has also greatly improved patient and staff experience – preventing delays to theatre starting and reducing the number of cancellations.

“We are lucky to have such a committed and skilled EPOC team – thank you and keep up the great work”.

Dr Hewins also thanked the team for its “outstanding contribution to planned care over the last three years”.

He added: “The hospital and the Trust would be in a very different position if it were not for the EPOC.”
