A new research facility at Good Hope Hospital is now open to patients.

Located on the former CU27 ward, it provides dedicated space for interventional research, giving more of our patients the opportunity to take part in clinical trials.

Previously, patients were seen in different areas of the hospital, including on wards, depending on available space. The new dedicated area provides a consistent environment for seeing patients and carrying out research, with more space to support the growing service.

The first patient to be treated in the facility was 95-year-old Joan, who is taking part in a new stroke study led by Consultant Dr Yadava, exploring the effects of two drugs on cognition following stroke.

For Joan, the new facility has made taking part possible, as she wouldn’t have been able to travel further afield to access the study.

Jo Plumb, Director of Research and Innovation at University Hospitals Birmingham, said: “We are delighted to see research at Good Hope continue to grow, and this facility is an important part of that development. Having dedicated clinical space for interventional research means we can support a wider range of studies at Good Hope and make research more accessible to our local patients.

“This has been made possible thanks to the amazing support from the Good Hope Executive Team, who recognised the need for this important investment. We are looking forward to offering exciting research opportunities that will help to improve the treatment and care our patients receive.”
