New service launched to help with acute pain

A new acute pain service, aimed at enhancing inpatient recovery and overall experience through improved management of acute pain, has been launched at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Acute pain, which is temporary and often caused by injury or surgery, can significantly impact patient recovery when not adequately controlled.

Effective post-surgery pain management is crucial for promoting a swifter and smoother recovery process.

The newly launched service will provide essential guidance to ward teams on managing patients' pain and ensuring the safety of advanced pain-relieving techniques and devices.

This initiative is designed to offer vital support to inpatients with acute pain needs, thereby improving their recovery outcomes.

Maria Few, Lead Nurse for the Acute Pain Service, said: “Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives a high standard of pain management care when in acute need at QEHB. By working closely with our ward teams, we can help to significantly enhance the recovery and experience for our patients.”

Matt Metcalfe, Hospital Executive Director said: “This new service underscores QEHB's commitment to provide the best possible care for our patients. I am very grateful to the new acute pain service team for their expertise and support provided to our ward teams to benefit patients in pain.”

The acute pain service team will be available to support wards and patients from 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. Referrals to the service can be made via the Prescribing Information and Communication System (PICS) by an appropriate clinician.
