After over four decades of unwavering service, Dean Grinham has retired from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

From his first role at the age of 16, to becoming Chief Information Officer (CIO) in 2023, Dean’s career has seen some remarkable milestones, and his work has had an enduring impact. Dean began his journey as a medical records clerk at the former Selly Oak Hospital through the Youth Training Scheme.

By the age of 19, he became medical records supervisor, progressing to assistant medical records manager at Birmingham Orthopaedic Hospital, aged 25.

Five years later, Dean stepped into IT as patient administration system application support manager, shaping systems vital to patient care. In 2004, he led the implementation of integrated patient management (IPM) as IT project manager.

He became deputy director of IT in 2016, reaching the pinnacle of his career as CIO in 2023.

Reflecting on his time at the Trust, Dean said: "Being in a position to influence careers, improve lives, and see individuals flourish has been my greatest pleasure. Not only does it improve the lives of those people, but also their families. Seeing those people flourish and create value for the organisation is something that will always live with me. Those individuals are cogs in a huge wheel, but without them, the wheel simply will not turn at the pace it needs to."
