Statement on MP's strike threat claim

Published on 24/01/2023

Please find below our statement on Preet Gill MP's claims on social media that we are threatening to refer striking doctors for review.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) said:

“Preet Gill MP’s claims on social media that we are threatening to refer doctors who strike to the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) panel are simply not true and will not happen.

“It is not, and never will be, UHB’s policy – we respect any colleague’s right to strike.

“The ARCP, which Ms Gill has cited in her tweet, is a well-established Health Education England process and not one run by UHB.

“We contacted Ms Gill and her office yesterday afternoon (Monday 23 January 2023), to clarify our position on these claims, asking her to retract the tweet and set the record straight. To our knowledge, this has not yet happened.”
