The nursing team

Solihull adult EB clinical nurse specialists

The adult EB clinical nurse specialists are based at Solihull Hospital and are usually the initial point of contact for patients and the people who support them.

On Mondays EB clinics are hosted at Solihull, but the team also undertake home visits too. This could be because you are having problems with wound infections, a wound not healing, or to give advice on how to treat wounds yourself.

Other specific issues we discuss whilst undertaking a home visit where appropriate, are:

  • pain
  • swallowing issues
  • psychological status
  • family/carer dynamics
  • dietetic needs
  • podiatry issues
  • dental problems
  • ophthalmic issues
  • occupational therapy

Once a wound or affected area has been examined, it may be a different dressing or cream that is required, or if necessary, medication.

Most patients will already have an established skin dressing regime, and the team is happy to support in maintaining that.

Depending on the type of EB a patient has, The skin may need to be regularly examined to monitor wounds as some types of some can increase the susceptibility to skin cancer.

Additional care include a clinic visit with a consultant for review, just in case a skin biopsy is required, and direct referrals within the EB specialist service can be made.

If patients are admitted to a local hospital, the team will visit and provide education to the health professionals regarding EB. Recognising that most patients prefer to receive treatment close to home, the service supports individuals undergoing surgery in their local hospitals whenever possible. Consultant surgeons, anaesthetists, and healthcare professionals will be advised in best practice care specific to EB to ensure appropriate treatment.

The team is committed to supporting patients with services available in their local area. This includes:

  • assistance with care packages
  • social services support
  • co-ordination with GPs and community services
  • local care providers receiving training on EB wound management and skin care
