FibroScan

A fibroscan is a quick, painless and non-invasive test that measures the stiffness of your liver. It works in a similar way to an ultrasound scan and uses gentle sound waves to assess the health of your liver. Increased liver stiffness can be a sign of scarring (fibrosis), which may develop as a result of liver disease. The scan does not involve needles, injections or radiation and most people find it comfortable.

What Happens at Your Appointment?

Your appointment will usually take around 15–20 minutes. A member of the Community Liver Health Checks team will ask you a few questions about your health and any risk factors for liver disease.

If you are eligible, the fibroscan will then be carried out.

During the scan, you will lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head.

A small probe will be placed on the skin over your liver, and several measurements will be taken. The scan itself usually takes less than 10 minutes.

Your Results

In most cases, your fibroscan results will be available immediately after the scan.

A member of the team will explain what your results mean in a clear and easy-to-understand way.

The scan measures liver stiffness, which helps to identify whether there is any evidence of liver scarring. Your results will always be considered alongside your medical history and other relevant information.

Next Steps

Depending on your results, you may not need any further action and will be given advice on how to keep your liver healthy.

If your scan suggests changes that need further assessment, we may recommend that you see your GP or refer you to a hospital liver specialist for additional tests or treatment.
