Does a fibroscan hurt?

No. A fibroscan is a painless, non-invasive test. Most people describe it as feeling like a gentle tapping sensation on the skin.

How long does the appointment take?

Your appointment usually lasts around 15–20 minutes, including your assessment and the fibroscan if you are eligible.

Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

It is best not to eat or drink for 3 hours before your appointment as it can sometimes affect the accuracy of the scan. You can have plain water.

Will I get my results on the day?

Yes. Your results will be available immediately after your fibroscan and a member of the team will explain what they mean.

What happens if my scan is abnormal?

If your scan suggests that you may have liver scarring or another liver problem, we will explain the findings and discuss the next steps. This may include advice, further tests or referral to your GP or a liver specialist.

Can anyone have a fibroscan?

Not everyone is suitable for a fibroscan. Before offering a scan, we will ask you some questions to check whether it is appropriate for you. If you have had a liver scan within the last 12 months, you will not usually be offered another scan.

Is fibroscan the same as an ultrasound?

No. Although it looks similar to an ultrasound, a fibroscan is designed to measure the stiffness of your liver rather than take pictures of it.

What if my fibroscan result is normal?

A normal result is reassuring and usually means there is no evidence of significant liver scarring. We will still provide advice on how to keep your liver healthy and reduce your risk of future liver disease.

Can liver disease be prevented?

Many types of liver disease can be prevented or the risk reduced by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, staying physically active, eating a balanced diet and getting tested or vaccinated for viral hepatitis where appropriate.
