Mental health services

We understand that looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Everyone’s experience is different, and at times you may need extra support to help you cope with emotional, psychological, or mental health challenges.

For our Children and Young People life can feel difficult, confusing, or overwhelming — and that’s okay. Everyone feels worried, sad, angry, or stressed at times. If these feelings start to affect your day‑to‑day life, they might need a little extra support.

The Paediatric department at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust works in partnership with Forward Thinking Birmingham, SOLAR and Staffordshire CAHMS.

If your child or young person is admitted to the paediatric department for support with their mental health needs, we will refer them to be seen by one of our partners.

Once you have been referred, our mental health services colleagues will triage and assess the referral enabling them to prioritise patient needs and decide on the most appropriate pathway. This may include a stay in our inpatient ward, a community support pathway or navigated to online support services.

You may find it helpful to complete, with your child or young person, one of our hospital passports if you feel a wellbeing or a learning disability and autism passport would support you child or young person’s journey. This will help individuals share important information about their health, communication needs, and preferences. It also ensures that healthcare staff understand the child or young person’s needs, allowing for safe and compassionate care. The passport includes details about the person's communication preferences and any necessary adjustments for their care. Please ask a member of the team for further details.

If you have a passport from another Trust, we welcome you to use this during your visit.
