Pharmacy

The Paediatric Pharmacy team at UHB supports children, young people and their families by ensuring medicines are safe, effective and tailored to individual needs. Specialist pharmacists work closely with doctors, nurses and specialist teams to make sure each child receives the right medicine, at the right dose, at the right time.

Inpatient care

Medicines work very differently in babies, children and teenagers. Our clinical pharmacists have specialist knowledge in areas such as growth, development and age-related dosing. This ensures:

  • medicines are precisely adjusted to a child’s age, weight and condition
  • potential side effects and medicine interactions are identified early
  • any side effects are monitored and managed
  • families receive clear guidance so they feel confident using medicines at home
  • we work alongside the medical and nursing team to optimise treatment and respond quickly to changes in your child’s condition

Outpatient care

We dispense medicines following clinic appointments and provide advice on how to use them correctly. Our team explains how medicines work and what to expect, helping you feel confident managing treatment at home.

Discharge from hospital

Before your child goes home, we prepare their medicines and explain how and when to take them. We ensure you understand any changes to treatment and answer any questions you may have. As part of the NHS Discharge Medicines Service, we also send key information about any changes to your child’s medicines to your chosen community pharmacy, helping to keep them safe once they are home.

The Medicines for Children website provides reliable, easy to understand information written specifically for parents and carers. It includes leaflets on how medicines are used in children, what to expect, and how to give them safely at home. You can access the full library of leaflets and resources below.

Pharmacy First

The Pharmacy First service allows community pharmacists to assess and treat a range of common health conditions without the need for a GP appointment. This means families can get fast, convenient advice and treatment for minor illnesses, helping to free up GP appointments for children who need more specialist care.
