Immunology

The Immunology Department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) provides a UKAS-accredited diagnostic service for patients with immune system disorders, allergies and infectious diseases.

The department was the first NHS Immunology laboratory in the UK and has helped shape immunology services and training nationally. It supports University Hospitals Birmingham, local GP practices and healthcare organisations across the UK. The laboratory also works closely with adult and children's Clinical Immunology services.

Our laboratory provides a wide range of specialist tests, including:

  • autoimmune disease testing
  • allergy testing
  • immunoglobulin and paraprotein analysis
  • complement studies
  • immune cell function testing
  • investigations for immune deficiency
  • infectious immunology testing

Testing is carried out across two specialist areas.

Main Immunology

This service includes:

  • immunochemistry
  • autoimmune serology
  • allergy testing

Cellular Immunology

This service focuses on:

  • immune deficiency investigations
  • infectious immunology testing

Both services use advanced laboratory techniques and provide expert scientific interpretation to support diagnosis, treatment and patient care.

The department is staffed by clinical scientists, biomedical scientists and medical laboratory assistants. The team also contributes to research projects, clinical trials and regional specialist networks.

Opening times

The Immunology laboratory is based at Heartlands Hospital.
