This test is performed by Clinical Biochemistry. A Biochemistry request form must be completed to avoid delays in testing.

Patient preparation

For pre-dose levels should be taken 20-24 hours after the last dose of amikacin. This assay is run throughout the day and night. The in-lab turnaround time is normally less than 24 hours.

Clinical guidance

Amikacin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic that exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of pathogens. The determination of serum drug levels is required to achieve optimum therapeutic efficacy and minimise toxicity.
