Clinical Biochemistry

Sample and container requirements

Serum Lithium Heparin Plasma (paediatrics only)

Minimum volume required

80 µL serum/plasma

Special requirements

None

Patient preparation

Drugs such as phenytoin and barbiturates may cause high GGT levels due to enzyme induction.

Sample viability

Turnaround time

This assay is run throughout the day and night. The in-lab turnaround time is normally less than 24 hours.

Reference range

Females: <38 IU/L Males: <55 IU/L (Source: Abbott Diagnostics)

Clinical guidance

Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) is a sensitive indicator of hepatobiliary disease and is often used to determine the origin of elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity.
