Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)

Clinical Biochemistry

Sample and container requirements

EDTA Plasma

Minimum volume required

Special requirements

Plasma must be separated and analysed within 24 hours of sample collection.

Patient preparation

None

Sample viability

Turnaround time

4 days If an urgent PTH is required, please contact the Duty Biochemist or the Duty Consultant to arrange.

Reference range

2.7 – 11.1 pmol/L (Source: locally derived) PTH should be interpreted in the context of calcium and albumin measurements. A PTH value inside reference limits in the presence of elevated corrected calcium values may indicate PTH excess.

Clinical guidance

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted by the parathyroid glands and plays an important role in calcium homeostasis.PTH analysis is used in the investigation of abnormal calcium levels in order to distinguish between parathyroid and non-parathyroid causes. It can also be used in monitoring renal patients and in assessing patients immediately post parathyroidectomy (or thyroidectomy). Please refer to LabTestsOnlineUK to learn more about PTH. https://labtestsonline.org.uk/tests/pth
