Clinical guidance

Catabolism of proteins and amino acids results in the formation of urea, which is predominantly cleared from the body by the kidneys. Measurement of urinary urea may be used as a measure of protein breakdown in the body. Low levels usually indicate malnutrition or renal dysfunction with high levels indicating excess protein intake or an increase in protein catabolism.
