Clinical guidance
Avian precipitins refer to IgG precipitating antibodies in the serum of individuals exposed to birds, particularly pigeons and budgerigars. These antibodies are often associated with a group of diseases termed extrinsic allergic alveolitis, known variously as pigeon, budgerigar or bird fanciers lung. The presence of IgG precipitating antibodies in the serum of affected patients is regarded as evidence of inhalational exposure to these antigens and not necessarily of disease.
