UTC construction enters the next phase

The Urgent Treatment Centre construction project at Good Hope Hospital is progressing well and entered a new phase this week.
Phase 3 will see the main front doors of the current Emergency Department (ED) close with all patients being re-routed via a new pedestrian walkway to enter the hospital building under Ward Block 1. This begins at 07:00 on Wednesday 16 September 2026.
Wheelchairs will be available for patients to use and traffic marshals will be on-site 24/7 helping to direct patients and visitors to the new walkway, alongside clear signage.
Patients arriving by ambulance are unaffected.
Traffic management remains in place, with the turning off Rectory Road near ED restricted to vehicles dropping off patients requiring emergency care and ambulances. Please use the Bedford Road (back) entrance to access the hospital site for all outpatient appointments and if you are visiting a loved one.
Patients and visitors with a Blue Badge can use the ‘wooden gate’ entrance off Rectory Road to access a disabled parking space.
We are sorry for any inconvenience as we begin the next, and most challenging, stage of our UTC construction project.
Our Emergency Department and Children's Emergency Department will remain open throughout the project.
New Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) given the go ahead

Good Hope Hospital has been given the go ahead from Birmingham City Council to begin construction of a state-of-the-art building which will house a new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).
The UTC will be co-located with the hospital's Emergency Department (ED), bringing urgent and emergency care services together under one roof for the first time. This integrated approach will streamline patient pathways, improve the quality, safety and timeliness of care while reducing delays. The development represents a significant milestone in the transformation of urgent and emergency care services, creating a modern, purpose-built ‘front door’ for the hospital where patients can be assessed and directed to the most appropriate service for their needs.

Traffic management in place from 8 June 2026

As building contractors MTX begin enabling works for the new UTC, there will be significant changes to traffic flow and parking across the Good Hope site to ensure everyone’s safety.
The Emergency Department (ED) will remain open throughout the building project.
Please avoid turning off Rectory Road near ED unless dropping off someone requiring emergency care. Use the Bedford Road (back) entrance.
Please follow all wayfinding signage and instructions.
Traffic marshals will on site supporting the flow of traffic.
