Patients, staff and visitors joined together for the switch-on of Heartlands Hospital’s Christmas tree lights.

Lighting up the large Christmas tree between Heartland’s main entrance and A&E department, the decorations are a poignant mark on the landscape for all arriving and leaving the hospital during the festive period.

With over 40 years’ service under his belt, recently retired respiratory medicine consultant, Professor Sherwood Burge was the guest of honour for the occasion, switching on the lights while onlookers cheered.

Sherwood worked at both Heartlands and the Birmingham Chest clinic, where he developed the Occupational Lung Disease service, one of only five in the UK, during his career.

Medical Assessment Unit nurse, Maureen Onwuzurike also touched the crowd with a poem she’d written about working during the Christmas period.

Lucy Binns, Heartlands Hospital Nursing Director, said:

"It is important for us to recognise and celebrate significant religious festivals by coming together as a team with our patients and communities to mark these special events.

"It was really special to get together and mark the start of the festive season through the light switch-on event."
