The Good Hope Hospital community is mourning the loss of Vera Holley, affectionately known as Holly, who passed away recently at the age of 95.

Holly dedicated her life to helping others. Holly began her career at Good Hope Hospital in 1969 as an auxiliary nurse, working in the Richard Salt Unit’s recovery ward. Her compassion and commitment quickly made her a beloved figure among colleagues and patients alike. Even after her retirement in 1995, Holly’s connection to the Good Hope Hospital continued. With the support of her husband, Ray, she volunteered and fundraised tirelessly. Over the years, Holly raised thousands of pounds for the hospital by organising raffles, auctions and bric a brac stalls. Her dedication was formally recognised in 2008 when a ward was named in her honour - the Vera Holley Clinical Decisions Unit.

On her 80th birthday, Holly received a personal letter from the then Chair of the Hospital Trust, Clive Wilkinson, congratulating her and expressing gratitude for her decades of service to the NHS.

Tributes from colleagues at the hospital reflect the respect and admiration she inspired.

Emma Hartill, Associate Director of Nursing, said: “Holly was such an amazing person and was definitely a Good Hope hero. She tirelessly supported the hospital and is always thought of and talked about, we will never forget her.”

Kaye Caulfield from the Imaging Department shared: “I remember Holly for her tirelessly hard work. She was a credit to the hospital and will be sadly missed by all.”

Samantha McDonnell from the Cardiology team added: “Holly was a breath of fresh air in the Emergency Department when I worked there.”

Holly will be remembered with deep gratitude and affection by all those who knew her.
