Why should I get involved or participate in research?

Research plays a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare, ensuring that treatments continue to improve and remain effective for patients.

Without research into new and existing interventions, it would not be possible to determine whether current treatments remain the most effective option. Evidence from research helps challenge and refine existing practice, feeding directly into national guidelines and improving standards of care.

Public involvement in research

By getting involved in research, you can help make research more relevant and useful to patients, carers and the public. By working with researchers, you will improve research and make a difference to the way health and social care is provided in the future.

Participation in research

The same applies to participating in research, but in addition you can also expand the range of treatment options available to you, offering access to new and emerging therapies that are not yet widely available through routine care. This may include participation in cutting-edge clinical trials that explore innovative treatments, such as mRNA personalised cancer vaccines.

Patients taking part in research will also receive care in dedicated, purpose-built research facilities, supported by highly skilled research teams. These teams are experienced in delivering safe, high-quality studies and provide close monitoring throughout your involvement, helping to ensure you are well looked after at every stage.

Hear from some of our research patients below about their experience in taking part in research at UHB and why they decided to get involved.
