University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) participates in the National Audit of Care at the End of Life (NACEL).
The NACEL Patient and Carer Tool allows patients, carers and members of the public to see how individual hospitals provide care at the end of life and support those important to the patient during their final admission.
The tool presents hospital-level results for five areas of end-of-life care:
- Personalised care and support planning discussions
- Assessments of spiritual, religious and cultural needs of families and others
- Pain relief given to treat symptoms at the end of life
- Overall quality of care as rated by bereaved people
- Whether the hospital has face-to-face specialist palliative care access eight hours a day, seven days a week
