Our maternity services

Within this information, we may use the terms "woman" and "women". However, we recognise that not only people who identify as women may want to access this content. Your care should be personalised, inclusive and sensitive to your needs, whatever your gender identity.

From Monday 20 March 2023, the antenatal clinic at Heartlands Hospital will be relocated to the Heartlands Treatment Centre (HTC).

University Hospitals Birmingham is a diverse teaching hospital trust. We are always learning, which ensures excellent, up-to-date care for our patients and families. 

Deciding where to have your baby is a very important decision. We want you to have the best birth experience possible, and for you to feel and safe and confident when you are with us.

We provide excellent care in our foetal medicine department, level 3 neonatal unit and level 1 special care baby unit, for babies who need a helping hand.

Our maternity teams offer a wide range of services at Good Hope and Heartlands hospitals.

Our approach

We know that this is an exciting time. We aim to help guide, support and give you information, from the moment you find out you are pregnant to the time you become parents, and into the first few weeks of parenthood. Our sensitive, kind, compassionate and flexible approach to care provides an inclusive, approach to every woman and her family, which is specific to the needs of maternity patients.

Your birthing options

Your birthing options will depend on how straightforward your pregnancy is. Please feel free to ask your midwife or doctor what your birthing options are; they will be happy to answer any questions.

Options which may be available to you include:

  • home birth
  • midwifery-led unit
  • delivery suite

You may also have a planned or emergency Caesarean section.

Extra support

We have extra services available to help support all our women.

  • Our specialist midwives offer support to vulnerable women
  • Our excellent community midwifery service and continuity-of-care teams provide tailored, compassionate care
    • Team Nightingale offers informative and inclusive care to disadvantaged areas of the community
    • Team McCall supports teenagers on their pregnancy journey
  • We have bereavement units on each of our maternity sites
  • Our Rainbow Clinics offer women emotional support and information after a pregnancy loss, and consultant input and care, if needed
