Specialist Rehabilitation Service

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is proud to provide a unique multidisciplinary service to patients who need assessment and treatment for a range of complex neurological or traumatic conditions. These include;

  • Acquired brain injury (traumatic brain injury, hypoxic injury, stroke etc)
  • Spinal Cord Injury (we work closely with our spinal cord injury colleagues)
  • Complex muscle tone problems
  • Polytrauma
  • Conditions affecting the nerves and muscles in arms and legs (including Critical Illness Myopathies, Guillan-Barré Syndrome, Acute/Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, Myositis etc)
  • Other neurological conditions (such as Functional Neurological Disorder, encephalopathies, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis etc)

Our service covers the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham through three teams;

  • Critical Care (Neuro and Trauma)
  • Neurosciences
  • Outliers

The purpose of these three teams is to ensure patients with complex rehabilitation needs have access to staff with the relevant specialist expertise, regardless of where a patient may be located in the hospital. Patients on Neurosciences or Critical Care (Neuro and Trauma) are picked up through their usual multidisciplinary team (MDT) handover process.  Patients on other wards can be referred to our service by their ward team contacting the Outlier team directly.

Our multidisciplinary teams consist of;

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Dietetics
  • Rehabilitation Assistants
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Acute Case Manager

We also work closely with our Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant colleagues. Where appropriate, we frequently refer patients to neurological inpatient rehabilitation or community specialist rehabilitation services, to support continued progress toward rehabilitation goals and their return to function.
