About us

The Clinic is available to support Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) inpatient therapists with optimising seating and wheelchair provision.

Our team will support with seating selection and set up, review of existing seating provision, provision of additional postural adaptations, pressure sore management and cushion selection.

We aim to maximise independence, minimise risks and enhance the patient experience at QEHB with the provision of hospital loan seating wheelchairs, and advising on seating provision for discharge and community follow up.

Conditions we treat

We will support patients with a range of conditions that affect their seating needs, and aim to support patients who are:

  • unable to sit upright in a standard chair
  • have uncontrolled movements or spasms
  • have joint stiffness, contracture, increased tone
  • have weakness and fatigue
  • have an increased risk to skin integrity

What to expect

We will provide a review session with patients to work out optimum seating options. This could be telephone advice to ward therapists or joint in-person reviews. We follow the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations for step-by-step complex seating reviews.

Through our reviews we are able to expand our range of seating, postural adaptations and cushion to meet the increasingly complex needs of our patients.

We will also provide education and training to departments and services across Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, tailored to needs.

Who we work with

We will support any therapist from supporting new members of staff to understand the process for specialist seating assessment, through to joint problem solving with experienced clinicians.

How to be referred

This service is only available for in-patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).
