Children's Day Surgery Unit (CDSU)

The Children’s Day Surgery Unit (CDSU) is a ward for children and young people who need an operation but do not always need to stay in hospital for more than one day. We work with many different specialties to ensure your child receives the best care.

Some children may need to stay overnight after their operation, the surgeon will let you know before your operation day if this is the case. For these children, they will be moved to another ward in the evening after the operation.

Children cannot eat before their surgery; it is very important that you follow the advice given prior to the operation regarding fasting times. All children will be offered food and drink after their operation, when it is safe to do so.

We also look after children on this ward who come for non-surgical procedures (medical day cases). Some children will need to stay for just a few hours, whilst others will have to stay all day. The length of time you need to be in hospital depends on the procedure or tests that are required.

Children cannot eat before some of the procedures that we offer here; it is very important that you follow the advice given prior to the procedure regarding fasting times. All children will be offered food and drink after their procedure, when it is safe to do so.

We understand this may be an anxious time for you and your child and we have our play team on hand to support both of you during your stay. We are able to offer distraction and play techniques that allow your child to prepare for their procedure through play.
