Learning disabilities

The Children’s Community Learning Disability Team works with children, young people, and their families and carers to give clear and helpful support that focuses on each child’s needs, and helps them reach their full potential.

We work with families and carers to use simple strategies, set up routines, and use visual guides and social stories to help each child or young person.

We run workshops for parents and carers to help with behaviour, toileting, sleep, and fussy eating. Families can join these by being referred to our team or through one of our link special schools.

The Learning Disability Nurses are linked to the Special Schools in Solihull:

  • Merstone School and Pebbles Nursery
  • Forest Oak School
  • Hazel Oak School
  • Reynalds Cross and Green Lane

We provide advice, support and interventions in the following areas:

  • Toileting
  • Sleep issues
  • Puberty
  • Personal relationships
  • Behaviour management
  • Fussy eating
  • Personal Hygiene

How to refer

We accept referrals from parents/carers and any professional involved with the child in need of support. Our referral criteria is:

  • Diagnosed moderate - severe learning disability
  • Under 18 years old
  • Registered with a Solihull GP

Learning Disability Register

If your child has a learning disability they can be added to the Learning Disability Register at their GP. This will help with reasonable adjustments for their appointments and when they turn 14 years old they should then be invited annual for their annual health checks. To add your child to the Learning Disability Register, contact your GP and they will be able to advise you on this. Below is further information regarding the Learning Disability Register.

Annual Health Checks

Annual health checks are for people over 14 years old who have a learning disability. Physical and mental health checks are carried out by a doctor or a nurse. The individual can be supported by a parent or carer during their appointment if they would like. Further information regarding annual health checks can be found in the link below.

Hospital passports

Hospital passports can be used for children and adults who have a learning disability when they need to access hospital. When the child or young person attends hospital, they are taken with them and they contain personalised information which will help the hospital staff know about the individuals needs, how to meet these best and help to make reasonable adjustments for the individual.

The hospital passports can be found in the downloads below.
