Patients can be referred to the physiotherapy department by their GP, or by any member of the hospital rheumatology team. Physiotherapy treatments are widely used to help manage pain, improve function and maintain independence.
- A physiotherapist specialising in rheumatology initially assesses all patients.
- After the initial assessment, a treatment programme will be agreed between the patient and the physiotherapist.
Although there are many physiotherapy treatments available, evidence suggests that education and therapeutic exercise are more beneficial to patient recovery and long term management of conditions, including self-management of symptoms. The physiotherapy also helps monitor your rheumatology condition and liaises with the rheumatology multidisciplinary team as required.
If you feel you would benefit from a physiotherapy assessment, please discuss this with the rheumatology team, or your GP.
If you have any questions about a referral to physiotherapy, please get in touch via telephone or email.
